Denouncing Racism
The First Presbyterian Church in Tallahassee has taken a significant step towards reconciliation by erecting a plaque that acknowledges and apologizes for its historical complicity in slavery. The plaque, prominently displayed on the church's front portico, explicitly expresses regret for the church's past embrace of racism, including the ownership of enslaved individuals by its early members.
Collaborating with the Black History Alliance, the church aims to raise awareness about its acknowledgment and commitment to address historical injustices. This initiative aligns with a broader national effort by the Presbyterian Church USA to confront the legacy of slavery and promote healing. The church plans various events, including a luncheon featuring Rev. Anthony Jermaine Ross-Allam, who will lead the Center for the Repair of Historical Harms initiative on February 29th.
Through public engagement activities like selfie photos with the plaque and community gatherings, the church seeks to foster dialogue and reflection during Black History Month and beyond. The plaque's inscription emphasizes the church's commitment to repairing the breach of racism and building a beloved community guided by love and forgiveness. Read More
